This is the "news" as reported to me during the late 2002 through 2003 time frame.  Other 2002 news by clicking here and 2001 by clicking here.
Terry and Carol Haycock have a new house and a new address in Strasburg VA.  The listing has been updated in the directory.

Sue Manes Pickard and new (relatively speaking) husband Bill, are off to Hawaii for a second honeymoon and then will travel Florida for three months in their 5th wheeler.  Sounds exciting.  I've been thinking about taking a trip to Walmart myself!  Sue an Bill are pictured on the new pictures of old folks page.10/18/02
Ron Willard recently donated his twentyfirst gallon of blood to the Red Cross.  The first two were inspired by his boss Jim Joiner, Principal Classifier at the Portsmouth NSY in 1966-70.  Good follow-through, Ron.  There is a picture of Ron and Joe Gibbs on the newpixofoldpeople page.  Ron does a great job of watching the Washington area papers for news (good and bad) about our colleagues.  .10/28/02

Bob Henderson of CCPO Charleston checked in with a tale about his tail.  A reminder that all us guys should have the annual prostate check.  Bob is in good health thank goodnesss.  He also passed a couple of new addresses for the directory in Bill Wilson and Bob Ostendorf both former slaves in the Charleston office.

Tim Kerlee turned 60 on Nov 20.  He and Janice are still in College Station home of the Texas A & M Aggies. 11/8/02

Ron Riester has been added to the directory.  Ron is a former head of Employee/Labor Relations at Crane, IN.  He is retired now and heard about the site from Steve Gregg and Dick McCauley.  Any of his old friends from the Philly ROCMM should give him a hello.
11/23/02
Always among the first, I had Holiday Greetings from Herb and Joyce Dauber from Kailua, Hawaii.  Boy I long for that place this time every year!  Herb came out of retirement for a short time this past year when he helped out on a manpower study for American Battle Monuments Commission, European Region.  He has to go back to France in May'June 2003 for more analysis and planning.  What a tough break.  Herb and Joyce also celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this past year with an opera tour to Prague, Budapest, and Vienna. 12/8/02

Karen Murashigi retired from the Pearl HRO and has now returned as a contract employee.  Some folks are a glutton for punishment.  But being a permanent member of the KMA Club makes it tolerable.

Washington gets a new look after the first of the year when Will Maltbie hangs it up in January and Betty Welch follows in February.  No news on successors but to kill the rumors I have not been contacted!

Pat and Dick McCauley are back in Las Vegas for the winter.  Don't expect a surprise visit before April.

Dotty M had and accident in October that had her out commission for a while.  I don't know the details and while she is always reliable to let me know what is going on with others I didn't know about here accident until I got her Christmas message.  Anyway she is now on a walking cast and Jerry is glad.12/13/02

Judy Garrard Jones has taken a job with the NAF folks in Germany working for the Stars and Stripes.  They will be back home in Wales for the holidays.

Received a beautiful Christmas scene via email from Joe Bamba.  Joe, originally from Guam, worked there, Washington, Subic and was a charter member of EARB.  Now living in Coral Springs, FL
Got an email from out of the blue yesterday from Don Musacchio former LMR guy with Norfolk Regional Ofice.  Since leaving Navy in 1994 to go to USDA in DC he has risen to Assistant Deputy Administrator for the Food Safety and Inspection Service.  Not the first talent Navy overlooked but certainly one of the more obvious.  My first dealings with Don were at a Labor Negotiations Training seminar in Daytona when we were paired as the"union reps" against 5 or 6 neophite managers.  Mostly I just sat back and occasionally put in an amen as Don did all the work.  Don wants all us "older folk" to know you should cook all your ground beef to a temperature of 160 drees so as to not hasten your trip to the Field of Stones listing and he also has access to the nutritional value of most commercially produced pet food if your pension doesn't go far enough (and the health insurance continues to rise). 1/16/03
On the 28th of March 2003 Lucinda Jo Glenn will retire from the HRO JAX.  Right now she is the HMFIC of the NADEP Satellite.  Cindy is a throwback to the personnelists of old and the ranking "Supercrab".  She started in Memphis with Chuck Denzin but quickly overcame that handicap.  She has worked in Kings Bay, Gitmo, Bermuda, and Jax, serving as the CPD in KB and Bermuda.  There will be a fine sendoff for her at the NAS JAX "T-Bar starting at 1530m on the 28th of March.  Several of us will be down and the rest of you are invited.  It you can make it you won't be sorry!  Pictures to follow.  Come be in them!  Email me for  a headquarters site to be determined.  1/23/03

Ron Burow has settled in to hais new home in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.  He has already brought them a Superbowl Championship as he did with Washington and Denver.  I cana't wait to see what he does with the baseball team.  As usual Ron is keeping the fish busy.  His new info is posted in the directory2/11/03

Will Maltbie is officially in the ranks of the retiree group.  He and Jackie are staying in the DC area as with many of us he moved so much during his career they no longer have a special place to call home.  Will's address and email are in the directory. 2/28/03

Jeff Neal a former Navy employee in Jacksonville and now Director of CIVPERS for DLA was selected to the Navy DASN job but he had second thoughts and called to decline the offer.  The new DASN is Pat Adams a former executive with Marriott.  It is good to see the Navy Career Management Program is still alive and functioning as well as ever.  You career personnelists make sure you get the mints on the pillows.

Lil Dimla has a new address in Modesto, CA.  It is posted in the directory along with her email address.  She sent a nice letter with memories of Jimmy Jones in the PI. 6/23/03

Recently had an email from a guy looking for Richard Nutwell.  With Dotty's help he was located and the mail forwarded to him.  In this case it was not a bill collector or an irrate hushand from years ago, but a friend from Richard's London days.  Richard is now a fulltime Mr. Mom and house-husband.  I added his address to the directory. 8-7-03

Lots of reorganization going on in Washington (can you imagine that?).  It's getting so I don't even recognize the "old timers".  Can it be 11 years this September that I pulled the plug?  What do you bet the "new" Defense personnel system looks like something we used 35-40 years ago?
Dotty M. let us know about the death of Jimmy Griffith.  Jimmy was a good friend who could always be counted  to give any help you asked for.   I last saw him on the golf course at Tantallon CC in Fort Washington.  One of Jimmy's friends, Joe Bamba, came up from Florida to be with him in his last days.  It seems much of the information I hear these days is when we add a stone to the field.

Retirements continue.  I hope these folks enjoy theirs as much as I have mine.  I went over 10 ye 9/3.  Pam Miller Pearson, formerly of North Island, White Oak lab and now the Transportation Security Agency is going in January.   Pam Smith formerly of North Island, Navy OCPM, arecently a civilian agency retired on 9/6/02.  Rick Schultz San Diego, now Navy headquarters is warming up for January/Feb 03.  Henry Romero was at Pam Smith's party.  He is doing consulting work now and is in DC often.  Others at the Pam Smith party were Conrad Pearson, Lou Guest, Tom Wilson, and Meredith Weiser (now at theNational Gallery of Art) and old
friend Allan Johnson and his 5 year old daughter.

Ben James retired in 9/02.  He is living in "wild and wonderful" West Virginia and pursuing canoeing and canoe building.Don't look for a union shop!

Heard from another old labor guy this week.  Bill Godwin is still cutting a trail around Charleston.  Said he was going to send a picture of him and "some young Russian chicks" in Red Square.  What does a labor guy do in Russia...especially an old labor guy?    9/11/02

I sent out an email August 27 to see how many of my addresses were still good and I got back a number of updates on the old folks.  They are summarized here.
Bill Da Rosa says his 73 year old body is holding up very well, no thanks to clean living but to his personal formula of two vodka martinis per week, plus white and red wines and beer in between.  They just returnd from Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX after a visit with son Alex and daughter-in-law.  They are going to Spain 9/16-103 with therre neighborhood couples.  Bill gets to act as guide and interpreter.

Dave Gibbons is in Diamondhead, Mississippi and can't believe its been 3 and a half years since he retired.  Believe me I know the feeling.  It's 11 years for me this month.  They are in touch with Jerry and Estela Stewart and visited in the past year. They returned to Hawaii for 2 weeks a year ago and saw all the folks he worked with at CCPO Pearl.  They also see Carol and John Martinez in New Orleans often.

Heard from Frank Catenaccio and added his info to the directory.  From tne address it appears he is still working with the Marines.

Bruce Stevens recent retiree from BUPERS DCPP (or whatever they are called now) is back in Jacksonville and not missing Memphis.  I think he is doing some consultant/training work.

Judy Garrard Jones is still in Germany working for the Stars and Stripes organization.  It took her a long time to leave Jax but she's making up for it now.

The "ole dog" Herb Dauber heading back to France soon to work on the American Battle Monuments Commission manpower study.  Herb has more hours on this job than the Allies had in WWII.  But you can bet it will done right!

Chuck Denzin is in the Atlanta area where his wife Rita is working for the Social Security Administration.  While Rita toils, he is guarding a swimming pool.

Jerry Stewart remains at the same address and would like to know what folks are up to.  If you let me know I'll print it up.  Expect many are like me.  Time goes by, we think we aren't doing much of interest, but we probably are if we just started talking about it.

Phyllis Roddy is still in San Diego watching the fires in Mission Trails Park being battled successfully so far.  She and her sisters have a tradition of getting together once a year at a different location.  This year they were in the Poconos and did some geneological work in the Stroudsburg area circa 1840.  Appears that by 1898 the entire family had been run our of the state westward bound.

Picked up a new name and address in Charlie Agnew.  Charlie was an Employee Development Spec under Paul Kessler at ASO/NSD in 63-64.  He has worked for DLA, CSC, Interior, HEW, Energy, and AFGE.  He's been retired since 85 and still contracting for some EEO complaint investigations.  He's moving to FL soon.

Sylvia Ewell is still alive and well in theTidewater area.  She reminds me she is in the lost section. I will move you to found.  Still in contact with Bob Funderburk.  What is it about that guy?

Sue Manes and husband are getting ready to go on a cruise to New England and Canada.  They camp in FL for the winter.

Bert Lederer had major back surgery in January (is there another kind).  It was totally successful and Bert is now doing things he did at 40-or maybe that's things he should have done at 40.  Bert and Claydene have purchased a new motorhome and are going on the road full time when Clay gets out of the real estate business.  Bert that may be a while!  He also gave me a new picture that I have posted here.

Hal Boyles is still in Pensacola.  We both had the same email address for Bill Bond but it came back as undeliverable.

Val Herman is off to Yerevan, Armenia for three weeks work with the USAID Mission.

George Wooten just returned to Naples, FL following a 30+ boat trip to Virginia Beach and back.  He's still robbing the locals on the golf course.  Good health for him and Sandra.  They now have 5 grandchildren.

Al and Liz Reid are staying busy.  Al had a hip replacement but he is recovering very well.  He will be back on the golf course soon as they will be returning to FL for the cool months.  Liz has been working on contract with the B&W group.

Steve Collins is still traveling around lying to Navy supervisors about how good the personnel system is and what great support they get from their HRO's.  For this he makes good money and achieves platinum elite status with airlines and hotels.  He owes me a beer when he comes  Memphis.

Dotty Meletzke corrected address for several folks including Sue Martin, Mary Miller, Betsey Miller, and passed on the site address to Al Holston, formerly at LB NSY now with customs.  Dottie and Jerry are now back home after spending some time with kids and grandkids in Denmark this summer during the great European heat wave.

Messages were returned as undeliverable for the following folks:Bob Henderson, Harry Wicklund, Tom Rinehart, Bob Blum,  and Bill Bond.  If anyone know a correct email address I would appreciate having it.  2Sep03

Talk about a small world.  Recently George Steinhauer played a round of golf in Williamsburg.  While sitting around the 19th hole and talking to the group he had been playing with he discovered that one of the players was Herb Dauber's son-in-law.

Tim and Janice Kerlee are still living in Texas and working with the students at Texas A & M.  They were named parents of the year by the students for 203-2004.  Quite an honor.  Tim and Janice have been their since their son, Tim Jr. was killed in the tragic bonfare accident.  The book written by Janice regarding the incident and their coping is still selling and thus far there are four students on campus on scholarships honoring Tim Jr.  Get info on the book here.  Tim's golf game has picked up but he says he's on the senior tees.  Me, too.  A friend told me earlier this year, "if you're ever gonna use them you better get your ass on up there!"

Myrna Adams checked in from sunny California to asy don't believe everything you hear about the state.  She is still presiding over the local homeowners association of 76 units.  This is her 5th year of two three year terms.  Shouldn't do such a good job, Myrna.  She passes on that Andy Anderson developed alzheimers a few years ago and is no longer at the address in the directory.  His wife also dide and he is being cared for by a daughter.  On another sad note she had heard from several sources that Bob Davis had died.  I have ask for info thta would let me learn more about this.  Bob was in Vietnam til the end, then CPO at New Orleans, Great Lakes, and NSC Oakland.  We had some real experiences on TAD.

Lloyd Grable is in the same home in McLean as when he went to OIR in 1958.  He has been doing some traveling to Spain, Italy, France and most interesting place, Turkey.  Since 9/11 he has been a volunteer HR consultant with his old agency-Energy.  They are struggling with the new stuff coming from Congress, the President, and OPM?PMB.  The new buzz phrase is "transformation of human capital".  This scould be as earth shattering as CSRS in 1978.  Look yourself in the mirror and say thanks that you aren't there.  4Sep2003
I continue to get some up dates on addresses and some that are evidently no longer good.  Disregard the email address for Pat Turck, Tom Crowley, and Fritz Gasper.  I don't know if the other info is correct or not.  When time permits I will try to send a mailer to those without email addresses.  Some of this info goes back to the mailed newsletter.

Tolly Roehm is still doing some work on EEO ligation contracts for the Navy.  They are taking a train trip to and from the Mississippi River and a 7 day steamboat ride from St. Louis to Minneapolis.

If you have been trying to reach Bill Price he has a new email address.  Look in the directory under P.

Carole Martinez has an interesting volunteer job.  She is working with Efpiscopal Churches in Louisiana and Mississippi to develop and implement strategic plans.  As a member of the local dying church believe me its needed.  She has visited or been visited by several of the old folks including Dave Gibbons, Dick McCauley, Jerry Stewart, Eva Bien, and Pat Sandberg.  That's what she gets for living in New Orleans.  8Sep03
A few days ago I sent out 100 postcards to folks where I had addresses but no email address or where I wasn't sure they were still correct.  Like most of you the computer throws a fit now and then and I lose information.  Some of them I haven't heard from since stopping the hardcopy of the newsletter.

There is a new address for Steve Gregg in Bloomington, IN.

George Wyman and wife have been toolin'around northern Europe recently.  They enjoyed a 35 hour plane ride and wait from London at 8AM until the next day just before midnight 's arrival in Kailua, HI.  18 Sep03

Bill Bond let me know he is still alive and kicking...but not as high.  Bill just turned 81 and he and Mary are still in their beloved Pensacola home.  Bill says he and Winston Conway still have lunch every couple of months.  There's an updated email address for Bill in the Directory section.

Bruce Howard checked in with a new email address.  He is glad to know there are still some of "above the sod".  He also saddly reports that John Whittier has passed away in Arizona of Lou Gerig's disease (ALS).

Dorothy Gross responded to the postcard blitz.  She doesn't have email but her address in the directory is still correct.  Dorothy is widowed, but continues to volunteer at a variety of jobs in her town of Edmonds, WA.  She works with the police on crime prevention, the Chamber of Commerce visitor information center and as a reading tutor of second graders.  Occasionally she regales the local NARFE chapter with tales from Vietnam days.  Still traveling she just returned from a tour of the BENELUX country and is scheduled for a tour of archeological sites in Mexico.  I am reminded of the sage wisdom of Bill McIllhenny-"nothing of any archeological value was ever discovered in the shade."

Bill Pankonin and wife Thelma are still in the Tucson area.  Bill says they are not among the computer users and still depend on the mailman.  He is a nice fella.

Bill Wardlow doesn't do the computer either but he gave me his daughter's email address so we can communicate.  It's posted in the directory.  Burnie Byrne also forwarded an email address.

I got a return to sender from my card to Bill Paz, Mary Miller, Vaughn Ferguson, Betty Beckwith, Harley Jones, Fred Becker,Vern Stewart, John Higgins, Phil Myerson, Ruth Combs, E. V. Morin and Howard Goode.  If you have any info on them let me know. 9/25/03

Kay Miller has a new email address to be found on the directory page.  She just finished being secretary to a big high school reunion that included everyone who ever attended her old school that operated from 1924-1959.  There were 400 attendees at the American Celebration  on Parade at Shenandoah Caverns, VA.

Herb Margerum and wife Margarite hardly stay at home.  Since the beginning of 2000 they have been on 6 cruises for a total of 230 days.  They have been to the South Pacific Islands of WWII, around South America, up the Amazon, and from India around Africa to Rome.  They have taken land tours of China and Spain and in their spare time took a driving trip through Utah and Colorado.9/30/03

Mike Abbott still has not moved into the 21st century and has no email but I got a nice (?) long letter from him.  Since retiring in in May, 1997 he and Barbara have traveled to Alaska, Maine, and Burmuda.  I don't know how he got to Burmuda since the train doesn't run there!  Still much the family man his kids and grandkids are all close by.  He belongs to a unique club called the ROMEOs-thats for Retired Old Men Eating Out.    He hasn't been to Elmer, NJ to visit the "bee" but he did give a blind man and his dog a lift to the eye doctor.  Those who have Mike hold forth at conferences will know what we are talking about.  To those who have never-well you should have!

Had a great card from Kathleen Krider.  She is not a computer person and doesn't want to be.  She will be 91 in December and although she says her traveling days are over she still does volunteer work at her local library every week and plays bridge several times a week.  She has a four-legged roommate, a 5 year old cat named-what else-Kit.

Don't forget to check the entries in the guest book on the home page, I just did and was surprised to see the number of new folks heard from.  I am supposed to get an email telling me each time an entry is made, but had received none for several months.  Frankly I forgot about it.  When I checked today I went into the program and found that the address that has been getting notification is someone with an email name of granite at tic.net.  Bet he has been surprised and will be glad to know I corrected it.  Ron note that I also changed the futuristic approach to my updates. If you have put something on the guest book that you want removed send me an email.  I'm the only one who can change it.  10/9/03

Sequel to small world article above:  On October 13, 2003, a major event occurred at the Williamsburg Country Club.  George Steinhauer and Herb Dauber had a wonderful luinch reunion also attended by Herb's son-in-law Mike Homschek.  Naturally Herb did not indulge in golf, but much time was spent rekindling old times, as well as the major life events of the past 16 years since Herb's retirement  and 1994 when George "bit the bullet".  Herb's only disapointment was learning that George, who sings bass at one of the local churches, doesn't care for opera!  (He and 150 million others-my note.)  Herb reports that George looks very fit and obviouly is well suited to retirement.  To keep the memory fresh Mike took a picture of the fearless twosome and it appears on the newpix of old people page. Good for you guys.  We all need to do more of this as the days slide by!  14 Oct 2003

Randy Riley also checked in to provide a new email address and to up-date his recent activity.  Randy retired in 1995 and did some investigaion work for contractors from 1998-2001.  He is now associated with GRA another contractor who has a site on the internet at gra3.com.  I pulled it up and found two other alumni listed on the staff of associates-Bob and Sherry Gilson.  14 Oct 03

Bob Henderson longtime training director at CCPO Charleston sent a message up dating Charleston folks and addresses.  Thanks for the effort Bob.  Bob and Carol are recent proud grandparents of young man Dylan (Welsh meaning "ray of light").  Bob  lunched with Bill Wilson and Sam Gleaton recently both are doing well.  Roy Runey,  former Principal Classifer (bet thats a term from the past) at CCPO Charleston had triple bypass surgery in May but has recovered nicely and he and wife Diane are grandparents to a set of twins presented to them by son Joey of Florence, SC.  Bob Ostendorff also a member of the crack Charleston training staff lives in Walterboro, SC and was recently visited by The Hendersons.  Roy and Bob have been added to the directory. 14 Oct 03

Henry Romero is still headquartered in San Diego but says he spends time, up to a month at a time back in D. C.  He is still in the consulting business.  We have often talked about how we were fortunate to have worked during the "golden years" of our business.  Henry attests to this very well.  Click here to read comments on todays HR situation "in his own words".
14Oct 03

A note from Bill Meacham gets him listed in the directory.  Bill worked for John Burton in the AWCO days and later at Rocmm Jax.  He did two tours in Vietnam and is now retired in Foley, AL.

Bill McIllhenny and wife Roberta divide their time between archeological investigations worldwide, orchid culture and shows, and exercises in gourmet cooking. They are about to depart for Cambodia and Laos.  Bill is in quest of perfection of the martini and an authentic original Mexican Margarita.  He was always a high achiever! 15 Oct 2003

A nice message from Bob Blumb.  He and wife (of 39 years) Joan still live in Crofton, MD.  He has been retired for eight years now.  Although best (?) know to us as a classifier, he spent his last several years in the personnel information systems business where he was able to capitalize on his interest in computers.  He has done web design for both fun and profit since retiring.  Bob put his reflections eloquently and they are worth reading after you have read Henry's comments above. 18 Oct 2003

Gerry Siegel sstill lives in Mililani on Oahu in beautiful Hawaii.  Although his wife Carole will always be a mid-westerner, neither really want to return to the winters.  I sure don't blame them as we buckle down here in NW Tennessee.  He has dropped in on some of his old friends on trips to the mainland-Carter Miller, Donna Kelly (Willett), and Don West.  A picture of Gerry has been added to the new pix of old people page.

Bernie Byrne has evidently found the fountain of youth.  He works his Christmas tree farm in southern MD, along with some hardwood timbering as well, and he is slowly moving into grapes with his son, who wants to start a vinyard.  That should get some visitors stopping by!  He recently bicycled the length of the Erie Canal with his granddaughters and he bikes the trail from Key Largo to Key West every February.  Now he's taking up parasailing. 26 Oct 03

Email from Margie Worsham, who is still among the full-time wage earners in our profession, lets me know that we have two more recent retirees to welcome into "God's waiting room".  Mozella Delk former Director of Classification at OCPM Norfolk and most recently, Head of Customer Focused Division (can you believe that title-I think it means internal staffing) retired on 30 September.  She and her husband will be staying in the area as they have just moved into a luxury condo on the Elizabeth River in downtown Norfolk.  Patrica "Pat" Hughes retired in May 03.  She was working for Nona Jordan at COMLANTFLT at retirement, but had several years in training, staffing and EEO at OCPM Norfolk.  She is residing in Virginia Beach.

Frank Knowles has sold his property in the wilds of Washington state and moved back to the Hill Country of Texas.  He is attempting to regain touch with the "known world" and has a new email address in the directory.  7 Nov 03
