Made contact with Dave Gibbons recently. Dave was with Army before becoming one of the chosen few at Yorktown, Pearl, and more recently the HRO-SE in Stennis. 5/23/01
An email from Ben James was welcome. Ben is now working for DOD, but will always be remembered for his best work in Navy. He got the site address from Al Cohen (still with Navy Hdqtrs.) and couldn't open it at first. Al told him perhaps he was disconnected for moving from Navy. Ben also passed on that Conrad Pearson having retired from OCPM, having retired from MarCorps NAF, and having retired from USNR is now working on contract for NAVAIRat Pax River. Go figure! 5-23/01
Alert, Alert: Bob Curran reports that he is not dead-well maybe some parts of him. Yes John Robert is alive-well sort of-he's working as a contract consultant with the Office of Disability Employment DOL. It was good to hear from you Bob. Much better now than when You were at NavSup and I was in Charleston. Thanks to Vince Vacarro for unearthing Bob.5/25/01
Earl Payne checked in and wants everyone to know he may bace bolted to DOD but he's still a Navy Alumni. To prove it he identified everyone in the Durham, NH Young Personnelists photo on the more pic page. What a remarkable memory, Earl. 5/01
Heard from Gail Williams, formerly Gail Robertson when with Navy and the CCPO-CC group. Gail is living in Melbourne Beach, FL, just down the street from her sister-in-law Pat Turck, another CCPO-CC type. 5/01
Margie Worsham now at HROC-East enjoyed the site and provided the date of her father's death. Zack Worsham was Personnel Officer at Albany, Corpus Christi, and NSC Charleston before his death in 1976. 5/01
Dave Gibbons provided the email addresses for Jerry Stewart, Colleen Sherman, and Carole Martinez. Find them in the Directory. Dave is living in Diamondhead, MS on the Gulf Coast after retiring from the HROC-SE. He recently had a visit from Dick and Pat McCauley on their round the USA tour.
Steve Collins writes: "Your story about John Goodyard shows we need to do a better job of convincing the rest of us "old-timers" to get into cyberspace." Personally I think there are a lot more "old-timers" in cyberspace that we know about. We need to do a better job of letting them know there is a site devoted to them. I have a large number of address for snailmail that has no corresponding e-mail address. I'm sure there have been many PCs added in the past year. We need to spread the word. 5/25/01
There have been postive comments on the John Burton page. Dotty Meletzke is correct that to make it perfect we would need a picture of John sitting at his old Underwood manual typewriter, at 11 o'clock at night, working away with one finger on each hand. Sitting at his right would be a glass of "Old Crow". Dotty also shares that among the changes taking place on the DC scene is the moving of Dr. Diane Disney (DOD personnel head) to Penn State as a dean. Hal, this is not going to help the football program. The lady could not make a decision before the play clock runs down. It is also rumored that Pat Bradshaw will replace Disney at DOD.
After this year Herb Dauber will join the ranks of the triple-dippers. He will retire again from the non-appropriated fund job he has held for ten years at Kaneohe Bay MCAS.
Recently I took a trip through Picayune MS where I picked up Chuck Denzin. We went from there to Jacksonville FL. We made that leg in record time of two days. It used to take four when we were working! We had a wings and beer lunch at Hooters with Wayne Lauten, Bill Medlin, Al Newton, and Kay Marti. Kay has a future major leaguer playing for Stetson this year. We also got to have a golf outing at Wayne's Hidden Hills Country Club. Chuck and I got there early and thought we had a parking place up close, but it was reserved for the club champion. At the same time we both said "Damn, that's GeorgeWooten's spot." There will be pictures to follow. 3/21/01
Don Klein emailed to let us know he is alive and well in Sunset, SC. Don is living on a lake and selling real estate so he can determine who his neighbors will be. He cruises the lake a great deal but does not seem to be doing any fishing. Better stop to smell the roses, Don. Don has a 13 year old boy who is 6'1" and over 200. Hope he's a footballer. The Gamecocks and Lou Holtz could use him.
Tim Kerlee and wife Janice are settled in and busy working with the Texas A & M students. They are going to Scotland and England this summer and will be staying with Jon and Lyn Steinhilber in London. Jon and Lyn are associates from Jax. Lyn and I suffered through uncountable hours of strategic plannning at the NARF. Tim and Janice were recently in VA to play in a benefit golf tournament for the Tim Kerlee Jr. Scholarship Fund and Kings Daughters Children's Hospital.
I have received some great comments on the John Burton page. Including John's wife Jan, via Wayne Lauten. John's children also enjoyed knowing that there are those of us who remember their Dad.
Bob Best is responsible for getting Don Klein back in contact. I'll reserve judgement on that Bob. He also passes on that Frank Hong is returning to retirement after a stint with Navy Hdqtrs as the NAFI czar. If you are interested in the Army version of our site, Bob says it is at www.acpaa.org I haven't been there yet, but will. Bob saw a picture of an Edmundson in the Memphis Magazine and wondered if the guy was a relation of mine. He was a bar owner. Sorry no relation, although I have been known to invest in bars over the years.
Frank Knowles is still trying to sellout in the NW and move back to Texas. In cleaning out he has run across some old pictures but has not sent them yet. Come on Frank!
Ron Willard is back from a ten day trip to the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Anchorage. A great way to spend a retirement. 4/9/01
Picked up George Gunnning's email address thanks to more help from Bob Best. George and Jack Trachenberg do 2 1/2 miles several times a week. Where was all that energy when you were working? Jack and his wife Charlene are on a trip to Shanghai to visit relatives. Jack, George and Sam Shulman meet for lunch or dinnner often. Sam is still doing great. George has attended the Elderhostel programs and recommends them to all. Careful though or you might learn something! 5/13/01
Bill and Joanne DaRosa are off to Spain again in June. Alex's tour is up in Nov so this is the last free one for Bill. Bill has been involved in the Seminole County schools Mentoring Program for eight years and was selected Mentor of the Year for 2000. Bill insists on mentoring for students most in need of support. He hosts holiday dinners for students and their parents, and has followed his mentoring subjects after high school, into the community college. A great way to contribute in retirement. 3/9/01
Dotty Meletzke continues to lead in retirement. She did agreat job of keeping folks up dated on Bill Wagoner's health problems and progress. Bill had some serious hard times with multiple internal infections stemming from pancreas problems. He is doing better and is in rehibiliation now. It was a close call and lots of us were worried about you, Bill. Bill is now back at work (I'm told he is on half days-8 hours) 5/25/01
Henry Romero retired from his position as Associate Director for Workforce Compensation and Performance in the Office of Personnel Management on April 2. He's back home (sorta) in San Diego where he is working for the county as Human Resources Director for Classification, Compensation and Benefits. Henry previously worked as Director of Personnel for Justice before going to OPM, but his really significant contributiions as always, was as a member of the Navy Civilian Personnel community. There are a couple of pictures of Henry in younger days in the home page composite and pix page. Enjoy the retirement, Henry. At least as much as you can with another fulltime job!
Heard from old friend John Goodyard. John is 80 years young and was inquiring about the absence of the hardcopy newsletter. He said he hadn't received one since last spring and wonder if I had dropped him from the list. There hasn't been a hard copy since I put up the site on the net. Like some others I'm sure, John hasn't joined the computer crowd. I sent him copies of these pages so he could see what he's been missing. There are probably many others who are in the same situation or don't know where this site is. Help them find out. Meanwhile I'll try to update the heard from column more often, but realize I can only do it with your help. John is having a few health problems and would like to hear from his old friends. I have his mailing address or you can find it by looking for him in Oregon through one of the people finders. He's the one in Forest Grove.
George Vitetta HRO JAX is recovering from a stroke that hit him while on the job in Charleston. 10/01
Henry Romero is settled in San Diego now and his new address can be found in the directory. Also heard from Jim Mulvany. Jim has moved to a new home in Cole's Point, VA. He had dinner recently with Bill Wagoner and reports Bill is back to his old self after being as near death as one comes.
Found one of our longest running missing persons Bob Funderburk. Bob retired in Subic Bay in 1992 and lived there until returning to Jacksonville, FL in 1998. He is working at the golf course at Mayport and playing about 4 times a week. I can't wait to take him on.
Nothing like getting a virus in your email to hear from all your friends. Sorry for any problems I caused. Harry Wicklund thought I was appying for a job when he got a resume from me. Same for Steve Collins. Now I got to buy Steve's beer when he's in Memphis to make up for the virus I gave him. Jesse Smith caught the problem before it infected him and warned me to tread carefully as I am a big target. Right Jess, 240 big.
I had an interesting comment from a "still employed Human Resourceist" Debra Edmond. Not sure where she is working but she said "Although I think of all you alumni have the benefit of having gotten out while the getting was good, those of us left are hoping the swing fothe pendelum will bring us back to what once was." No doubt we enjoyed the golden years!
Also heard from another working stiff, Cindy Purcell Skulski Taylor. She came to OCMM 25 years ago as a temporary clerk-typist. She is a GS-14 and has been working for Herb Cowles until his retirement. News flash...She was promoted to GS-15 on 23 October!
Received new pictures of older people and started another picture page. Pictures were courtsey of Dotty M. Eva Bien and Pat Sandberg were out to see Jerry and her. She also had visits from Dick and Pat McCauley, and Meg Grimes. Dick and Meg worked together in London.
Sylvia Ewell is doing some contract work for the USDA Graduate School and for HerbCowles, who continues to work in retirement.
Ron Burow enjoys the web site and is happy in his retirement in CO. He stills spends a lot of time fishing and the bass and walleye have been good to him....cant't say the same for how he's treated them. One place he has been is Lake Powell in Utah. Betty and I visited the Denzin's there a few years ago. A beautiful place. Ron is to Virginia and Florida in September for visiting kids and grandkids and whatelse..fishing.
Dick and Pat McCauley have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 15 August 2001. Pat have things changed all that much? Back then he was driving a bread truck. Now he's driving a Dolphin with a slideout! Happy Anniversary, you guys...and many more. On their round the USA trip they recently visited Jerry Walsh and Dotty Meletzke in Deale, MD where they also saw former co-worker Meg Grimes. They also stopped to see Terry and Carol Haycock in Front Royal, VA.
Janice Kerlee, wife of Tim Kerlee has written a book about their experiences since the terrible Bonfire collapse at Texas A & M. Tim and Janice's only child, Tim Jr. was killed in the tragedy. Tim and Janice now live in College Station, TX and work in the campus ministry there. The book, A Chance to Say Goodbye is available by going to iUniverse.com, clicking on bookstore and selecting the search at the top of the page. The cost of the book is 11.95 + S&H and all profits go to benefit the Bonefire Relief Fund, scholarships or Campus Ministry. Give it a look.
Sue Manes is now married after 30 years of being single. She and husband Bill Pickard were married in November 2000 and have been traveling the U.S. by RV 5th wheeler since a honeymoon in Hawaii.
Marge Wage passed on info that she had heard from a friend in CA egarding the death of Norm Hill. I chased down the facts through the Ventura County newspaper. Details are on Fields of Stone.
Earl Payne provided a new, old picture that you will find on the old pix page.
Jerry Stewart, now retired in Orlando, sent a number of new and one old(er) picture that has been added to the site. Jerry was found through Dave Gibbons.
Pat Bradshaw has been under the weather but is now recovered and going back to work...somewhere. Her address is in the directory thanks to Dotty M. who continues to keep me posted on goings on in the community. She and Jerry are off to Denmark in July. Dotty says Jerry has kids living there, but I think he is undergoing a series of operations that have to be updated each year.
Len Klein and Tom Evans have been doing work with National Academy of Public Administration. Tom also is working for the B&W group at Energy.
Liz Reid is out of retirement briefly and working for HRSC Washington while she and Al are back in MD for the summer.
Jim Wachter now of the DOD Wage and Salary Division and former Navy employee with CCPO-CC, NSA Naples, and NSC Norfolk provided email addresses for Pat Turck and Mike Marchesani. They are now in the directory.
Ron Willard is looking for Mel Takahashi. Perhaps in Hawaii. Any help appreciated.
Allen Johnson and wife Stella, along with four year old Stella Jr..are living in Vienna, VA. Stella has a couple more years left on her sentence with OPM and Allen is meanwhile doing some modeling and acting....honest folks, I don't make this stuff up! He won an academy award for his previous work as a personnel director and was once featured in OCMM magazine in a NCPDS ad. They hope to move to a warmer climate after Stella's retirement. Meanwhile I have added his address to the directory.
Joyce Girling (Schmollinger) has been the site manager running the HROJAX branch in Charleston since returning from London where she worked in the HRO by day an ran the pubs at night. Her reward was a new husband, a Brit, and a name change. She still gets together with some of the old NSC CCPO hands. Ah, those were the days!
Vivian "Bernice" Parker retired from HRO JAX in '99.
She mentioned some of her former Personnel Director bosses that made me wonder where they are: John Moreland (Glynco), Charlie Heath (Key West), Owen Russell (Mayport), Gene Levriett (Cecil Field). Does anyone know their whereabouts?
Jeff Neal a former trainee under Chuck Denzin and Cindy Glenn in Memphis obviously learned well. He is now the Director, Human Resources, Defense Logistics Agency. One of the pleasures of growing older is seeing the success of those who followed.
Myrna Adams checked in after Thanksgiving. She is still living the goodlife in the Bay area. She was finally successful in opening an attachment. Myrna, I really think it's your elderly computer!
Bill And JoAnne DaRosa send Christmas greetings. They once again spent a couple of months in Spain and Portugal this past summer. Son Alex is stationed at Rota as a Naval Aviator. 11/29/01
First Christmas greeting honors goes to Herb and Marguarite Margerum. Mailed on 16 November. Way to go Herb! They are still well and still traveling. They made it to England in March for a 61 day cruise around South America, visiting 20 ports before returning to England. As I'm sure we all will remember where we were on September 11, Herb and Marguarite were in Beijing, China.
From Harry Wicklund comes a Mahalo for the Thanksgiving greetings and a "same to me" from the North West. Also a sincere concern for our fellow men and women.

George Vitetta is still recovering from his on the job stroke. He's going to be ok with the right medicine, diet, and exercise. Won't we all!! 11/23/01
